Basil’s Bar

This palm-thatched bar on stilts may look like a flimsy waterside structure but it’s been the site of some of the Caribbean’s most legendary parties. Founded by Basil Charles, a man who was born in the Grenadines and has lived among the British aristocracy and world’s jet-setters for much of his life, the bar is as he declares, “a leveler…for it welcomes everyone, and with a vibe that transcends stature or position in life, sailors party with business moguls, high fashion models, gardeners, rocks stars and school teachers.”

The kitchen opens for breakfast (don’t miss the banana pancakes) and stays open until 10 p.m. when the dancing begins. On the nights when there is not a live band playing, there is a DJ.

Wednesday nights are buffet-style, and reservations are recommended in high season. The 2008 Mustique Blues Festival, which raises funds for the Basil Charles Education Trust for school scholarships for the children of St. Vincent, will take begin on January 23.
