Destination: St. Barth's

Inspired by the island’s independence as an overseas collectivity, a status granted in 2007, residents seem seized by a new entrepreneurial spirit. There are stricter building standards being established, too, but almost every high-end hotel and restaurant has undergone or plans to undertake a renovation project of some kind. But even as things evolve, the beautiful beaches, French food and wine and a change of culture at America’s doorstep remain the real draw. Eden Rock co-owner David Matthews, who is determined to create a world-class resort, says of how the island has altered in a decade, “There’s a bit more traffic, a few less donkeys and a richer vicar.” Which is a friendly jab at one of his competitors, since the Hotel Saint-Barth Isle de France is owned by the island’s vicar.
Art lovers should swing by the gallery at Eden Rock Hotel, where Contemporary American artist Richard Prince, in partnership with the Gagosian Gallery, will preview new paintings as part of his “Eden Rock” or “Deathlands” series from December 18, 2007 – February 28, 2008.
There are now regularly scheduled flights from San Juan to St. Barth’s twice a day (at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.) on Tradewind Aviation.
Eden Rock is continuing its expansion with its fractional ownership program (nearly 75% sold), as well as two new over-the-top villas on its Filao Beach property: Villa Rockstar will be steps from the beach and equipped with every possible amusement that a spoiled superstar could desire, including a putting green, croquet, recording studio and screening room. The smaller (at 8,000 sq. ft. for two-bedroom suites) Villa Nina will be located right on the beach and will have it’s own art gallery and personal butler. Eden Rock owner Dave Matthews (no relation to the singer) and his wife, Jane, will live in each house for a few weeks to test-drive the experiences. Villa Nina will be available for renters by Christmas.
Hôtel Guanahani & Spa just upgraded its collection of Prestige Suites, which already includes the Wellness Suite, the Pelican Suite, the Beach House and La Villa. An existing suite will be transformed into a beautiful Garden House which will include one master bedroom suite and two adjoining rooms as well a private pool set within a lush garden. A brand new suite dubbed the Marigot Suite is being built adjacent to the spa and will house one of the three new spa treatment rooms in addition to a private pool and garden. As with all Prestige Suites, guests will enjoy a personal butler who provides the highest standard of service.
Le Sereno, the hotel that was given a sexy new look by Christian Liaigre two years ago, has launched a villa residence program too. Three villas will be built along the hillside above the resort. All will be designed by Liaigre and start at north of $7 million.
Amazing villas available for rent for the first time this year, include SIB BOW, the contemporary home of a renowned California philanthropist and art collector, and SIB JAY, which occupies a prime piece of land on the tip of Mont Jean that Edmond Rothschild picked out for himself but never built on. See villas for recommended houses for house parties, families and couples.
