Destination: Hawaii: Oahu
Overview Text Size A A A
Hundreds of years ago, the island of Oahu—and Honolulu in particular—was the private domain of Hawaiian royalty, their Hamptons, so to speak. Oahu is still an escape today, but now thousands of tourists from all over the world come to this Pacific Ocean paradise, as evidenced by the plethora of Vietnamese restaurants, Catholic churches and Buddhist temples. In addition, nearly 75 percent of the state’s population lives here (even though Oahu is only the third-largest Hawaiian island). Honolulu, the Aloha State’s capital, is also Hawaii’s cultural, shopping and fine-dining center. And while you might not guess it to look at the city’s high-rises and network of highways, there are places on Oahu to rival the beauty of any of the Hawaiian Islands.
