Miami Art Museum

The co-founder and director of Design Miami, Ambra Medda highly recommends this museum, whose permanent collection includes works by Joseph Cornell, Chuck Close, Francesco Clemente, Guillermo Kuitca, Fabian Marcaccio and many others. “I adore the Miami Art Museum,” says Medda.

Miami Design District

Here you’ll find not only furniture, home accessories and art by emerging or established talents, but also a place to get a sandwich and bottle of organic Pinot Noir. The Miami Design District is situated within the eighteen blocks between NE 36th Street to NE 41th Street and NE Second Avenue west to North Miami Avenue. Don’t let the look of the surrounding streets scare you away. While some blocks tend to look dirty and/or deserted at night (unless a specific event is under way), the district’s stores and boutiques buzz with action during the day. One of the best times to visit is the second Saturday of the month, when area galleries host Art & Design Night, offering music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Wynwood Art District

Just south of the Miami Design District—from NW 36th Street south to NW 19th Street—there’s a concentration of up-and-coming talent in the Wynwood Art District. You’ll find a more varied crowd here, from artsy cutting-edge types to established collectors, than in the Design District which has more manicured streets and higher rents.

Two outstanding private art collections particularly worth a visit: the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (591 NW 27th St., Miami; 305-576-1051; www.margulieswarehouse.com) exhibits photography that spans the early 1900s to the present, as well as video and installation art. The Rubell Family Collection (95 NW 29th St., Miami; 305-573-6090), located in a converted warehouse, features works by such contemporary artists as Damien Hirts, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami. Both venues are open to the public during the week, though you should call for the latest schedules. As with the Design District, galleries here hold an open house (and many serve free drinks) from 7 to 10 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month.
