Destination: Beijing

Getting Around Text Size A A A

Beijing is a sprawling city, with an overloaded public transportation system. Taxis are cheap (the flag fall is around $1.50, depending on the size of the cab), plentiful and prepared to wait around. It is possible to negotiate fees for a morning hire, or even a trip out to the Great Wall, but a translator will be needed for these discussions. Another option is to rent a hotel car by the hour or day. Don’t think about taking the subway or bus—neither is pleasant and can be tricky to use unless you speak or read Chinese. Likewise, for all the Chinese ballyhoo about its residents learning English, few people on the street understand enough to give proper directions. Always make sure your destination is written in Chinese characters, with detailed instructions. Taxi drivers do not expect any kind of a tip—but will gladly accept if it is offered!
