Destination: Palm Beach

Overview Text Size A A A

Palm Beach has a just reputation as the world’s winter playground. During the season, the sixteen-mile-long barrier island pulses with throngs of Old Guard aristocrats, heirs and heiresses of household-name companies, newly minted billionaires of the dot-com era, stars of stage and screen, titled Europeans, flashbulb magnets, poseurs and prospectors in search of the ultimate gold rush.

Thanks to its illustrious inhabitants, Palm Beach has long been known as one of the nation’s wealthiest enclaves. But where there is money, there is human folly—hence the island’s unofficial record for the most scandals per square mile. Against a backdrop of palm-fringed beaches and Gilded Age mansions, a cast of fascinating characters has played out some of the most notorious heists, affairs and tumbles from grace ever seen.

All that contributes to the allure of Palm Beach. A visitor may bump into Rod Stewart at dinner or share dance-floor space with a Kennedy, Churchill or Pulitzer. The parties are of epic proportions, as is the place’s mythology—whether relating to the past or to legends in the making.
