Destination: Deer Valley

One of my favorite places to ski with kids in the U.S. was a high-end secret for a few decades. The resort was founded on the idea that you could bring first-class-hotel-quality service to the entire ski experience. In the ’90s, a number of wealthy people bought houses on the mountain, inviting friends who then became repeat visitors. One Christmas I remember being in the lift line with Vice President Al Gore, his family and the Secret Service, but no photographers and no fuss. It wasn’t until the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 that the resort came to the attention of a wider circle. In 2005, it was voted the best ski resort in North America by readers of SKI magazine; last year it was ranked No. 2 after Vail; and it was just declared No. 1 again for 2007-8. One of its distinct advantages has always been how easy it is to reach: there are many flights into Salt Lake City, and then it’s a fifty-minute drive, depending on the road conditions, on a major highway to the resort. Even in snowstorms, the airport and the highway almost always remain open. A whole new crop of luxury hotels, including one from Montage and another from St. Regis, as well as expensive residence clubs are in the works, so the bar will now be raised even higher.
