Destination: Riviera Maya

Why Go Now Text Size A A A

When it comes to the Riviera Maya, the question you should be asking yourself is, Why go immediately? The area is changing at such a rapid pace that longtime visitors say they notice a difference after only a few weeks’ absence. Gigantic developments like Mayakobá, an exclusive community that will comprise four upscale hotels as well as private residences, are being built; new big-name hotels like Mandarin Oriental are slated to open within the year; and the population of Playa del Carmen, a formerly sleepy fishing village, is said to be growing by 16 percent a year. There’s talk of a second airport to be built in Tulum, which would certainly affect the relaxed ambience that currently distinguishes this town, located a safe distance from Cancún’s mass tourist arrivals. The development of the area has been compared to that of Las Vegas and Dubai, whose skylines and architectural makeup change almost daily, although of course neither of those desert towns has anything close to the Riviera Maya’s abundant natural beauty and Mayan history. What the three do have in common is an emphasis on attracting upscale travelers. In that respect Riviera Maya is hoping to rival such established luxury spots as Baja’s Los Cabos.
