Review

No matter how you picture this property before you arrive, Ubud’s COMO Shambhala Estate will leave you speechless. Designed by architect Cheong Yew Kuan, the twenty-two guesthouses that make up this twenty-three-acre property are made of local stone, wood and traditional alang-alang roofing. All villas are freestanding, situated in one of five themed residence clusters named after the elements – Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Forest – and each boasting a sumptuous communal outdoor living space and semi-private pool. Rooms showcase Asian antiques as well as beautiful local crafts and offer dreamy four-poster beds with white mosquito netting.

Famed hotelier Christina Ong (of Parrot Cay) took over here in 2004 and transformed the property, most notably by creating one of the world’s most desirable destination spas. She kept the original open-air jungle spa but made the welcome addition of a more easily accessible spa center, with its pools near the resort’s two restaurants.

Who Should Stay

Singles and couples looking for a wellness or romantic retreat. Children are allowed in certain villa categories, but the property is unmistakably geared towards romance.
