is a popular destination year-round for travelers who prefer a laid-back vibe but like to keep active. Any number of activities are available and there are many options when looking for lodging. Whether it’s a cabin or a junior suite, or a day on the slopes or a night in front of a roaring fire, Jackson Hole has much to offer visitors of every stripe. Here are five things to keep in mind when planning your trip there.

1. Where you stay depends on the season Jackson Hole is much more spread out than you may anticipate, so location, along with the weather, should be considered when choosing a place to stay. In the winter, if you are a skier, stay in or near Grand Teton Village, at the Four Seasons or a rental property nearby. If you’re looking for a cozy, secluded getaway, head to Amangani, which is perched on a hill and a good 20-minute drive from Jackson Hole. In the summer, stay in a rental property somewhere between Grand Teton Village and downtown Jackson, preferably near the Snake River. Outdoorsy types will enjoy both the Aman and Four Seasons—each can arrange hikes and activities around the properties.

2. Consider renting a villa There are a number of fabulous rental properties in Jackson Hole. Based on your preferences—style, location, size of your group—you can find the perfect place to meet your needs. Note: most rentals require a seven-night stay and are quick to sell out in the summer and winter.

3. Any skier can ski the mountain A common misconception of Jackson Hole is that it is an “expert” only mountain—this is due in part to a sign at the resort entrance that reads, “Our Mountain Is Like Nothing You Have Skied Before.” However, Jackson Hole offers a number of trails for all levels of skier. Experts need not fear, as there are also challenging runs—10,000 feet up, if you prefer.

4. The cuisine is amazing and the restaurants are casual Jackson Hole has an exciting dining scene and you can find menus comparable to what you may see in a major city. If you only have a few nights, be sure to fit Snake River Grill and Trio into your dinner schedule. For lunch, stop at Local (55 N. Cache St.; 307-201-1717) or have a quick bite at Pearl Street Market (40 W Pearl Ave.; 307-733-1300). Breakfast spots like Café Genevieve and Nora’s Fish Creek Inn shouldn’t be missed.

5. Get out and go The real reason to visit Jackson Hole is to enjoy all the activities the area has to offer. Whether staying for a weekend or for seven nights, you will not be bored. Of course there is skiing and hiking, but don’t forget there are a number of other adventures to be had: try snow-shoeing to the peaks with Indagare’s favorite operator; sleigh-riding through the Elk Reserve in the winter; white-water-rafting; and visiting the rodeo and symphony in the summer.
