Review
Though this boutique property’s exterior offers a nod to Parisian elegance with a pastel green façade, French doors and quaint striped awnings, the interior is undisputedly and comfortably British. With just 52 keys, Firmdale’s Charlotte Street Hotel offers a more intimate experience than its London sister properties, Ham Yard and Haymarket, but with the same Kit Kemp whimsy. Despite the smaller number of rooms, there are no shortage of room categories, from the cozy Superior rooms to the suite selection, which includes one-bedroom Virginia Wolf Suites with separate drawing rooms and the two-story Loft Suites—as well as connecting options for families. Uniquely shaped and patterned soft headboards, brightly colored bookcases and rugs and prim flower arrangements add that classic Firmdale character, with wallpapers that range from painted jungle scenes to textured stripes.
For total immersion into the shades and patterns of Charlotte Street, guests can cozy up to the Oscar bar for a pre-dinner drink surrounded by floor to ceiling murals. Those with a keen eye will be able to spot Kit, her husband and her dog, Oscar, painted into the scene behind the booths. The property also has a first-floor library—a great option for an after-dinner drink by the fire— and a subterranean cinema, available for private hire and ideal for a night in.
Located in Fitzrovia, an upmarket residential neighborhood known for its bistros and cafes that can be likened to New York’s West Village, Charlotte Street is ideal for returners to London who hope to be one step removed from the hustle and bustle.
