Review

“South Africa’s safari lodge scene is so established that anytime a newcomer comes along, you have to wonder: what gap is it trying to fill? Enter Saseka Tented Camp.”—Indagare’s Sam Doran after his visit in Spring 2024

In the legendary Thornybush Nature Reserve in eastern South Africa, on the bend of the seasonal Monwana River (don’t let the word river fool you—it is a dry riverbed throughout most of the year), Saseka Tented Camp has a more contemporary take on the classic tented safari concept. For those that are hesitant about the tented camp experience but want to try out the concept of sleeping under canvas in a reserve known for its legendary game viewing, there is no better place.

The style of the nine-tent camp is best described as nostalgic safari style mixed with 21st century design. While the tents themselves are modeled after those of the traditional Gold Rush settlers of the 1800s, inside, travelers will find a modern twist with luxurious amenities—steel frames, SMEG appliances and botanical pressing designs in hues of sage, gray and pink. Many of the tented suites have views of the riverbed with private decks and plunge pools and sun loungers, as well as outdoor showers (though don’t fret, there is one indoors as well).

The wow-factor hits upon arrival: walking into the elevated entrance and looking out over the multi-tiered common area where other guests gather for meals, drinks and midday relaxation, with views of the Monwana Riverbed beyond. For some guests, the safari experience begins even before the jeep pulls up, with animals traversing the riverbed right outside the camp. But once the game drives begin, Saseka Tented Camp’s incredibly experienced team of guides takes guests out into one of the most game rich areas of South Africa. Lions, elephants and giraffes are just the beginning—and don’t forget about the camp’s namesake, a female leopard named Saseka and her teenage cub who often hang out close to the lodge. Beyond game drives, there are opportunities for bush walks (16 years old and above), community visits and spa treatments to enjoy in the afternoons.

For those that want a little bit more privacy, consider Little Saseka. This two-tent complex is at the end of the lodge pathway and is an exclusive-use area. One tent is a normal tented bedroom suite. The other tent comprises a living and dining area with an expansive private deck and pool overlooking the riverbed. Extra beds can be set up in the living area for small children. Here, guests have the choice to dine privately or to join the other guests in the shared dining area of the lodge. There is also access to a private entry area for safari jeeps, making it easy to book a private game viewing vehicle.

Age Restrictions: Saseka Tented Camp accepts guests 12 and older. However, booking Little Saseka allows for younger guests to be considered. Please reach out to your trip designer to confirm.

There are commercial flights between both Cape Town and Johannesburg to Hoedspruit Airport. From Hoedspruit, it is a 45 minute road transfer to the lodge. Alternatively, shared or private charters can bring guests directly to one of the airstrips within Thornybush Nature Reserve.
