Review

The room Waldorf Astoria, opened in 2014, blends so well into its surroundings, it’s easy to think it had always been there. In a sense, it has—the hotel is set in a string of six 17th- and 18th-century palaces (larger versions of canal houses), with the original detailing to match. The homes were owned by a flock of important Dutch families, some of whose names you may recognize as you wander through the Dutch Masters wing in the Rijksmuseum—the Brentanos, the Hoofts, the Backers, the Geelvincks and the Huygenses.

Guests enter through a bright and beautiful lobby (the lighting throughout the hotel is exquisite) and are warmly welcomed by a dedicated staff member. Reception is discreetly tucked away in an alcove to the side, so the view stretches back to the humming Peacock Alley lounge, where guests can enjoy tea and small bites throughout the day, and on to the backyard gardens that brim with tulips in the spring.

The room décor is elegant enough to please traditionalists, particularly in the Golden Age detailing, yet strikes a fresh and modern tone that appeals to younger generations. The 93 rooms, lofts and suites, some with views to the canals and others overlooking the manicured gardens, are plush and comfortable with grand bathrooms and large windows. While some of the rooms tend to run on the smaller side, their light and welcoming interiors more than make up for it.

The hotel features a plush and peaceful Guerlain spa, a spacious gym, indoor pool and beautiful gardens. The Vault Bar is a must for its expertly curated cocktails whether or not you are staying at the hotel. The Goldfinch Brasserie serves sophisticated food for lunch and dinner and the two-Michelin-starred Librije's Zusje is the perfect place for a special occasion.
