Mother’s Day in South Africa Text Size A A A

For female travelers interested in seeing South Africa from a philanthropic angle, there’s a new trip occurring over Mother’s Day, called Mothers & Daughters—African Adventure. It’s run by the San Francisco-based tour operator the Cultural Explorer (211 27th Ave., Suite 301, San Francisco; 415-387-1335), which specializes in South African travel. Their itineraries tend to show both sides of this multi-faceted country: the safari camps, vineyards and scenic coastal villages as well as the townships, orphanages and AIDs clinics. On the Mothers & Daughters trip, the focus is on meeting and connecting with other local women, including artists (who sell their work at various townships) and entrepreneurs, a Zulu mother and daughter who live without electricity and a traditional healer from a Garden Route township. Accommodations are in locally-owned hotels, which range from the hip and stylish Peech Hotel (www.thepeech.co.za) in Johannesburg to the more traditional and classic Winchester Mansion (www.winchester.co.za) in Cape Town. Should you already have plans for Mother’s Day, another departure is offered in June. Trip costs $4,599 and is limited to female travelers ages 15 and above.
