Top Spring Break Choices Text Size A A A

This Month’s Strategy: There’s only a bit more than a month left to escape your winter routines with a getaway. I’ve found that the best spring trips come in two varieties: those that are planned way in advance and those that are left to the last-minute. Last year, I decided where to go early and was rewarded with an incredible ten-day family trip to Brazil. We enjoyed beach days in Bahia, boating in Angra and samba and soccer in Rio. To secure visas, house rentals and soccer tickets for our group of eight, we had to script things weeks in advance. Our members who are headed to Beijing, Egypt, Australia, St. Moritz and the Riviera Maya this March had to plan early too. (Spots on Nile cruises, in business-class on Quantas and rooms at Badrutt’s Palace and the Rosewood Mayakoba were sold out in late 2007.) Other top choices this year: Morocco, Turkey, St. Barth’s, Aspen, Deer Valley, Costa Rica and Argentina. Learn about my Paris and California last-minute plan and where you can still find ski availability as well as book sun and sightseeing escapes.

New on Indagare.com: The sexiest beach resorts in Bahia, Brazil and renting villas at the late Sir James Goldsmith’s Mexican retreat Cuixmala. Plus members’ advice on family itineraries in Turkey and on where NOT to stay in Patagonia.

First To Go: Only open a few weeks, Sir Norman Foster’s rebirth of the Post-Haus in St. Moritz offers a sleek new take on Alpine elegance. It’s his first restaurant project, and his love for the Swiss resort town is evident in the blend of historic reverence and modern magic. The place buzzes from breakfast (fresh croissants) to late-night dinners in the restaurant, but the time to arrive is at 3 p.m. when the fire is lit in the lounge and skiers gather for hot chocolate. In the Know: Last week someone asked me if I could go spring skiing any place, where would it be and why? I have such vivid memories of warm-weather skiing that I couldn’t possibly pick only one spot. There was the vacation when my sisters and I skied from Zermatt in Switzerland to Cervinia, Italy, where a meal of homemade pasta was followed by slopeside sunbathing amidst the many bronzed belle donne. Another great day, we carved our way from Courchevel 1850 to a small Relais & Chateaux gîte where the cheese came from goats that grazed on the same mountains in summer. And I’ll never forget ending a day in Sun Valley at the base of Baldy when the music and sunshine inspired dancing in ski boots. For my list of five top picks and how to book, see Spring Skiing.

Indagare in Action: How To Hong Kong: A member with just one evening in Hong Kong asked where to have drinks and dinner. Our advice: If staying at the Peninsula on the Kowloon side, start with cocktails at the InterContinental, with its spectacular views of the nightly light show over the harbor. If staying at the renovated Mandarin, head to its sister hotel the Landmark for a drink at MO Bar. For dinner, we reserved them a table at the members-only Kee Club. The verdict: “Wonderful. Went to Kee Club. Food incredible. Had fun talk with manager/owner, Frenchman who sends his regards.”
