Dude Ranches and Wilderness Retreats Text Size A A A
For those in search of outdoor adventure, Indagare rounded up several top-notch dude ranches—great for families or couples—that still have limited summertime availability. Almost all have a seven-night (Sunday to Sunday) minimum stay and most offer all-inclusive rates. Please note: many of these are last-minute cancellations and will go fast. For details or to book, contact Indagare by email or at 212-988-2611.
MONTANA
Family bonding: It has kids programs and nanny services, but the best thing about the Resort at Paws Up is Tent City, a collection of safari-style tents that offer luxury in the wilderness. Just completed: ten new Western-chic homes designed for families or groups traveling together.
Lone Mountain (Big Sky; www.lmranch.com), a favorite of our members and of Bill Bryan of Off the Beaten Path, is situated near Yellowstone Park and even offers campouts there for the older children.
Romantic escape: A Relais & Chateaux property set in the Rockies, Triple Creek Ranch (Darby; 406-821-4600, 800-654-2943; www.triplecreekranch.com) is perfect for couples. Adults only. Indagare Connoisseur members receive special benefits.
Girlfriends Getaway: Another property highly recommended by Bryan, Mountain Sky (Bozeman; www.mtnsky.com/) has special adults-only packages in the spring and fall, including a “Wild West Women Adventure” for females traveling together.
COLORADO
For foodies: A Relais & Chateaux property, Home Ranch (Clark; 970-879-1780; www.homeranch.com), is known for its cuisine. Children must be seven or older. Indagare Connoisseur members receive special benefits.
Wit’s End (800-236-9483; www.witsendranch.com), about a half-hour drive from Durango, has an extensive program for kids ages three and up with activities like scavenger hunts and teepee campouts. Separate teenage programs and nanny services for young children are also available.
WYOMING
A Bar A Ranch (Encampment; 307-327-5454; www.abararanch.com/splash.php), one of the oldest guest ranches in America, is another great choice for families. The ranch offers plenty of activities for children—inner-tubing down the North Platte River is particularly popular with teens—and nanny services available for infants.
BRITISH COLUMBIA
The sporting life: Clayoquot Wilderness Resort (Tofino, British Columbia; www.wildretreat.com) offers horseback riding, fishing, whale watching, bear spotting and a slew of other outdoor activities. All accommodations are safari-style in twenty eco-friendly white canvas tents.
