Destinations At Risk: Amazon Text Size A A A
At a time when many travelers are scaling back their trips, selecting meaningful, memorable journeys becomes even more important. Trusted guiding company Butterfield & Robinson has structured just that kind of excursion with their Destinations At Risk: The Amazon itinerary that departs February 17. The trip, led by two experienced guides and the noted marine conservationist Celine Cousteau (Jean-Michel’s daughter), provides both an overview of the area’s rich eco-diversity and insight into the threats the rainforest faces from encroaching population and industry.
Although the trip starts in Lima, Peru, the majority of the time will be spent deep in the jungle, accessed only by seaplanes and boats. Stops include a visit to an ancient Achuar village that is struggling with lumber and oil exploration, as well as excursions to remote areas where the virgin wilderness and wildlife remains untouched. Cousteau will also host guest speakers such as a former Catholic missionary turned environmentalist, a local governor and a representative from the energy industry to provide a thoughtful, robust discussion about how all sides can work together to promote and protect the rainforest. Accommodations include four nights on the celebrated M/V Aqua, but the true luxury is the ability to experience one of the world’s most precious, disappearing resources—and learn what can be done to save it.
