Joey Cabell on Maui Text Size A A A

Lifelong Hawaiian resident and surf legend Joey Cabell has sampled just about every water sport in the world during his long and varied career. I asked him about new sports that are gaining popularity in Hawaii, and he suggests these five for those who want to try something different:

1. Kitesurfing. Surfing with a kite harnesses the power of both wind and ocean simultaneously. Not for the meek, this sport lets you reach top speeds while flying along more than twenty feet in the air.

2. Canoe kiting. Those not faint of heart sit in a Hawaiian canoe, often with a crew of up to four other people, and reach high speeds with the aid of a kite-surfing kite.

3. Stand-up paddle boarding. Popular in Waikiki in the ’60s and now having a resurgence, this sport involves standing on a long, wide surfboard and propelling yourself with a canoe paddle. Not exactly easy, it is nevertheless mellower than some of the others mentioned here.

4. Canoe surfing. Learn to maneuver a canoe, solo or with a partner, through big waves, as if you were surfing.

5. Canoe sailing. This ancient Hawaiian practice is making a comeback here. It is exactly as it sounds: sailing in a canoe, alone or with a crew.
