New Exotic Fashion: Irving and Fine Text Size A A A
Eagle-eyed shoppers who have been in Maria Luisa in Paris, India Hicks’ Sugar Mill Trading Co. on Harbour Island or Charlotte Moss in New York in the past month have been among the first to grab pieces from what’s sure to be this year’s hottest new fashion for haute hippies. Irving and Fine is a just-launched clothing collection by textile fanatic Lisa Fine and Vogue Living Style editor Carolina Irving. The duo share a passion for exotic fabrics and the belief that life is infinitely richer if you can spend your time in many countries. Fine, who was born in Mississippi, but maintains addresses in Paris and New York and spends months each year in India, began her design career creating extravagant embroidered headboards. When her Paris apartment was featured in Elle Decor a few years ago, it revealed the global glamour of ikat-draped tables and suzani-upholstered seating, and clearly helped ignite the craze for tribal textiles among high-end interior designers.
Last year, Fine and Irving, a Venezuelan raised in Paris (her sister is Maria Luisa of the famous Right Bank boutique), decided to team up to bring their ethnic flair to a new collection of tops and dresses. They scoured the bazaars and boutiques of Istanbul for fabrics and called on trusted craftsmen in India to whip up dramatic blouses of vibrantly colored ikats with intricate embroidery. When they introduced them in Charlotte Moss’s townhouse boutique in New York this past November, the pieces sold so quickly to other Vogue editors and their friends that only the speediest style hunters could snag pieces for their winter holidays. Thankfully, Fine and Irving are typical of the worldly women who will be wearing their tops and the boutique owners who were the first to carry them: they are as savvy as they are stylish so the shelves are already stocked again with their limited edition looks.
Irving and Fine clothes are available at Charlotte Moss, Maria Luisa and the Sugar Mill Trading Co.
