Wunderkind conductor Gustavo Dudamel, poised to take over for Esa-Pekka Salonen in 2009, conducts his orchestra-to-be in a series of concerts at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, including a program featuring pieces by Prokofiev, Berlioz and Salonen and another with works by Strauss and Mozart. Contemporary art takes center stage on Manhattan’s East and West sides: The Whitney (www.whitney.org) hosts its annual Biennale, which focuses almost entirely on new works, many of which are site-specific, by more than seventy artists. The show opens on March 6 and runs through early June. The Armory Show (www.thearmoryshow.com), meanwhile, which draws galleries and collectors from around the world, runs from March 27-30.

Starting March 1, the Legion of Honor (www.famsf.org) is mounting Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990–2005, showcasing a wide range of the prolific photographer’s work, including celebrity portraits as well as scenes from her family life. From March 1-25.
