Beaches of Nicaragua Text Size A A A

Indagare member, MSP, recently visited Nicaragua with her husband and 7- and 9-year-old children. They spent two nights in Granada staying at Hotel Colon then headed to the beach at Morgan’s Rock for five nights.

We all enjoyed Granada with its colorful buildings and history. We booked a day long city tour which was well planned. We first toured around the town on a horse-drawn carriage, then did a little walking around, stopped for a delicious lunch then spent the afternoon on a boat touring Lake Nicaragua. Hotel Colon was very nice, with air-conditioning (crucial in April) and a prime location, right on the main square. Breakfast was delicious, and they have a small but nice pool that our kids appreciated. We stopped for lunch at the Bistro Hotel (hotelgranadanicaragua.com), which is also lovely, but they do not have a pool.

The drive to the beach was easy – it only took about two hours. Morgan’s Rock was fantastic and exceeded our expectations. The bungalows are cozy and have beautiful views on the beach below. The rooms are definitely rustic but still nice and clean, and we did not have any problems with bugs while we were there. It is hot and there is no AC but there was a nice breeze and we used the fans in the bungalow. The path up to the bungalows is steep so not ideal for guests who do not like stairs but was not an issue for us.

The beach is stunning – a huge sweep of pristine white sand ideal for boogie-boarding and swimming in the surf, even for little kids. There was no one on it, which was a delight. We loved the activities. Our 9-year-old son fished every morning with the guides and caught a lot of tuna, Mahi Mahi, grouper and mackerel. He had a blast, and we loved eating the fish for lunch and dinner every day. We had breakfast on the farm, which was fun and my husband had good surfing lessons. Our kids also loved the night jungle walk and saw tons of bugs. We did not see much wildlife on the trip – just monkeys in a tree once, a few iguanas and some birds. All the activities plus the great beach and pool gave us plenty to do.

The food was very good and we are picky eaters. Meals included great fresh salads, soups and meat and fish. They offered delicious Nicaraguan food as well as more simple grilled items. The coffee and cocktails were great too. The staff at Morgan’s Rock friendly and helpful. There were three other families at the resort so it was not at all crowded, and the other guests were interesting and nice. Our charter plane to Managua from the resort was cancelled but the drive was not big deal – 2 ½ hours on pretty good roads, so next time I would just plan on driving. I would highly recommend Morgan’s Rock we were very happy there for 5 nights.
