Mount Kilimanjaro Climate Change Challenge Text Size A A A
“As wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in the sun” are the famous words Hemingway once used to describe Mt. Kilimanjaro. Future generations, though, might have to assess Hemingway’s claim solely through photographs, as recent geological estimates predict the mountain’s last glacier will melt by the year 2020.
As part of its Climate Change Challenge, Abercrombie & Kent will hold a trip this October to survey the effects global warming has had on what is perhaps Africa’s greatest natural icon. Led by the Explorers Club President Richard Wiese, the voyage will help raise money for Friends of Conservation, an East African organization that helps support reforestation as well as grassroots efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Participants will trek along the less technical Machame Route, enjoy meals prepared by Abercrombie and Kent’s traveling chef and, of course, cap off the experience with a Champagne toast on the summit. Wiese, who has had his fair share of Hemingway-worthy adventures, including a recent journey to the Yucatan Jungle, where he was responsible for putting satellite collars on jaguars, is the Explorers’ Club youngest-ever president. Though this trip had sold out, a few spots have opened up due to schedule conflicts, so book immediately. The chance to join such a noble trek won’t last.
$5,965 per person plus a minimum $1,000 donation to the Friends of Conservation. Trip limited to 12 participants with a minimum age of 16; for booking or for more information call 800-554-7094.
