Passion Points: Green/Eco

Lodge at Chaa Creek, Belize Text Size A A A
Mick and Lucy Fleming created their model ecoresort almost by accident. The enterprising couple fell in love with this region of west central Belize in the 1970s, while traveling through Central America. They set up house and a working farm here and started hosting friends and friends of friends. Soon they found they had a virtual hotel on their hands, so they decided to make it an actual one. Out of necessity and love of the rainforest, they expanded their accommodations organically, using local materials and staff. Today, the lodge includes a spa and twenty-three cottages, the most comfortable of which are the Tree Top Jacuzzi suites, which have outdoor Jacuzzis overlooking the Macal River, and the Honeymoon Sky Room. Activities include horseback riding, canoeing, Mayan-temple tours, hiking and nature explorations, including visits to Chaa’s butterfly farm and a nocturnal walk for viewing tarantulas and other night crawlers. Rooms from $210.
