“During a December trip to SE Asia, we stayed at The Nam Hai on the coast of central Vietnam and think it’s one of the chicest hotels we’ve ever seen. (It opened in 2006.) The architecture and details are a visual treat, the beach is vast, the staff is great and everything seems perfectly in harmony with nature. The one-bedroom bungalows all face the ocean but for the best view, get one as close to the beach as possible. There are also larger villas with private pools and butlers. In the winter the ocean is cold but one of the hotel’s two pools is heated. The gift shop is good and a massage at the spa is one of the most amazing experiences in a beautiful setting – start to finish. Even if you’re not mad about a long Asian massage process, like me, it’s a must. Especially in the evening when candles are glowing everywhere.
Make sure to visit the nearby ancient town of Hoi An, which has charming small houses and fun shopping. Stop by Viettown, which is a very touristy store but they sell fun lanterns and silk pajamas. They will also custom make linen and silk clothes that are delivered to the hotel the next evening. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be there during the full moon when the whole town is lit by thousands of colorful lanterns. Also, nearby in Da Nang is The Cham Museum, which houses the most extensive collection of Cham art in the world. It’s another must see – even the museum’s design is wonderful. And don’t worry about how to get all your purchases home, the Nam Hai can FedEx everything!”
