Summer Highlights in Spain Text Size A A A
WHAT’S NEW
BEACHFRONT HIDEAWAY: Formentera, the lovely island off of Ibiza, has a new six-room agriturismo on the beach near the lighthouse. Cap de Barbaria makes a wonderful addition to the island’s laid-back luxury scene.
ART SMART: If you didn’t catch the Juan Munoz retrospective at the Tate Modern, it opens at the Guggenheim Bilbao on May 27. The Madrid-born artist, who died on Ibiza in 2001, is known for his large-scale figurative installations.
BARCELONA Check out CaixaForum, a 12,000-square-foot contemporary art space in one of the city’s first modernist building, formerly a textile factory. Poetic steel-and-glass “trees,” designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, frame the entrance, and the large interior accommodates an intriguing mix of exhibitions.
WHERE TO STAY
HIDEAWAYS: At the end of a cypress-lined drive is the Stein Group’s newest property: the twenty-five-room Gran Hotel Son Julia on Mallorca. Like its sister property, the Son Net, it feels like a private country estate, but here the design is less grand European and more exotic Mediterranean.
VILLAS TO GET: One of the top rentals on Ibiza is a five-bedroom house near Ibiza town with breathtaking sea views, a Mediterranean garden and incredible modern art collection. Email us or call for photos and details 212-988-2477.
On Mallorca, you can choose between a clifftop five-bedroom house on Cap Formentor and a 217-acre private estate. The estate has six-bedroom manor house with two living rooms, two dining rooms (one formal, one informal), a television room, a home cinema, a games room, an office, a snooker room, an indoor spa with a gym and swimming pool. Additional features: a guest house and on-site wildlife sanctuary; manicured gardens; a floodlit tennis court; three small lakes with fountains and 24-hour security system. Golf carts are provided for traveling around the property. Email us or call for photos and details 212-988-2477.
FAMILY: Hold a house party or family reunion at a staffed ten-bedroom villa on the Marbella coast. A screening room, game room, gym, indoor and outdoor pools plus proximity to historic Andalucian towns. Email us or call for photos and details 212-988-2477.
Stay in some charming properties along the Costa Brava, which make an ideal excursion from Barcelona or the South of France.
WHERE TO EAT
GOURMET PILGRIMAGE: Foodies agree that you’ll eat better in the north of Spain than almost anywhere else in the world. Recommendations on some Basque country restaurants not to miss.
SETTING: Discover where Barcelona’s stylish set goes for meals that turn into a day or night on the beach.
