Venice is where Murano glass, Burano lace and Venetian masks come from, and this is where to buy them.

If luxury labels are what you seek, exit Piazza San Marco at the west end that faces the basilica and leads to Salizada San Moisé. To find a concentration of Italian luxury designers, make a left on Calle Vallaresso toward the Grand Canal and the Monaco & Grand Hotel. The narrow alley is home to Pucci, Gucci, Loro Piana, Missoni, Bottega Veneta and Roberto Cavalli. For designers like Hermès, Chanel, Fendi, Fratelli Rosseti, Valentino, Versace and Etro, don’t make the left and keep on Salizada San Moisé until you hit the Campo San Moisé, where the Hotel Bauer faces Prada.

The larger retail area, known as the Mercerie, extends from the piazza to the Rialto, with prices dropping as you go. Via Garibaldi, near the Biennale in the Castello neighborhood, is where the Venetians shop. (For a bit of nearby culture, take a walk across the bridge at the end of the island and visit the remote San Pietro in Castello, Venice’s cathedral until 1807.) Also, in the small alleys off the Campo Santa Margherita, in Dorsoduro, artisans offer handcrafted objects. If you’re not an EU citizen, keep your receipts (scontrino), as you are entitled to a rebate on the sales tax at the airport.
