Mallorca: Where to Stay: Luxury: Gran Hotel Son Net

Gran Hotel Son Net

Perched above the sleepy village of Puigpunyent, near the Tramuntana Mountains, is one of the island’s most prestigious grand hotels. A long driveway passes by Mediterranean pine trees and terraced gardens en route to a 17th-century mansion that’s painted a surprising deep pink. Originally the stately home of the Canadian hotelier David Stein, Gran Son Net still feels like someone’s private estate. The walls are covered with Stein’s own collection of Warhols and Hockneys, and the staff is friendly but formal. All of the twenty-five rooms and suites are unique, but each is equally luxuriously appointed with four-poster beds, rich fabrics and spacious marble bathrooms. (Ask for a deluxe room on the top floors for a postcard-perfect view—even the showers have a small window to the outdoors.) Most of the guests end up lounging by the 100-foot-long pool in private cabanas, while the more adventurous explore the surrounding landscape on the hotel’s mountain bikes. The concierge can also arrange for a yacht or sailboat charter, so you can explore the coves of the north coast with a knowledgeable captain. Thanks to Son Net’s excellent gastronomic restaurant, L’Orangerie, (which was recently remodeled and will soon be renamed the Oleum) most visitors stay on property for dinner; the dining room is housed in a towering old olive press. Rooms from $786.
