Hawaii: Kauai: Introduction: Overview

Kauai’s nickname, the Garden Isle, scarcely does justice to the wilds of Hawaii’s oldest island. With a tropical air, ample rainfall, taro fields, jumble of jagged peaks and rushing waterfalls, Kauai will seemingly never be tamed despite attempts to develop it through the years. Considering that three hurricanes have devastated the island at various times since 1959 (the most recent, Iniki, occurred on September 11, 1992), it appears that Mother Nature is working overtime to keep things pono, or the way they always were.
