Bahia: Introduction: Why Go Now

Brazilians know a lot about sensuality. After all, their country is the land of samba, bossa nova, itsy-bitsy bikinis and Gisele Bündchen. So when I tell you that I discovered some of my all-time favorite hideaways in the place that Brazilians call “the land of happiness,” you should consider making a trip before it’s overrun.

British hotelier Anouska Hempel is already at work on Aquapura, a sexy new property near Itacaré, which will bring the first international style five-star resort. Overpriced Italian and American resort wear can now be found in little boutiques ringing the main square of the sleepy fishing village of Trancoso. Surely entrepreneurs determined to develop the next great place will follow. When they do, some of the indigineous rhythm and rituals will be replaced by global standards that dilute local color.
