Iceland: Where to Shop: Overview

Reykjavík is touted as one of Europe’s best boutique destinations, but frankly, the astronomical prices put a damper on a real shopping spree. That said, it is an interesting city for anyone interested in fashion and design, as some of the world’s most cutting-edge labels have originated here. Even if you’re not in the market for a fox miniskirt or a frilly tulle evening gown, browsing through Steinunn and Spaksmannsspjarir is fascinating. Other boutiques worth a visit are sister boutiques Kron and KronKron for an eclectic and well-edited array of lesser-known European and U.K. labels. The main shopping street is Laugavegur, an easy walk from the 101 Hotel and Hotel Borg, and most shops are either on it or on adjacent streets. Ubiquitous are woolen knits; the Handknitting Association of Iceland has a nice selection.
