This week and next, some of our friends from abroad are visiting New York and sharing their passion for and insights on Africa and Asia. We would like to invite Indagare members to meet the artists.

AFRICA: DAVID BRUCE PHOTOGRAPHS

Born in South Africa, photographer David Bruce is best known for his personal work on the Ju/’hoansi Bushmen of the Kalahari, a unique combination of art and social commitment born out of a rare level of contact with the subject. His extraordinary photographs shed light on a sensitive culture that is in the process of being lost to the world. An artist and meticulous craftsman, Bruce founded the Ju/’hoansi Development Fund, supporting education and sustainable development in the Nyae Nyae Conservancy, Namibia. Last year, he produced a limited edition book of his portraits, raising funds in support of the Ju/’hoan people. Please join us for cocktails at Sotheby’s to see David Bruce’s photography and hear his story. Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder of Indagare, will be conducting a brief Q&A with Bruce. ASIA: KAI-YIN LO JEWELRY

You are also invited to meet jewelry designer Kai-Yin Lo and see some of her latest creations. Named the “World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer 2007,” Kai-Yin Lo is renowned for her graceful creations that infuse traditional Chinese jewelry with a modern sensibility. Born in Hong Kong and educated in England, she is also a respected historian and author of the book House, Home, Family: Living and Being Chinese. She will make a personal appearance at the Asia Society from Wednesday to Saturday, October 15-18, from 1-4 pm. Asia Store at Asia Society, 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street), New York.

ASIA: ERIC CHAN AND CALVIN TSAO DISCUSSION

In addition, the Kai-Yin Lo Distinguished Program Series at the Asia Society is hosting a discussion with internationally acclaimed designer Eric Chan, of Ecco Design, and architect Calvin Tsao, of Tsao & McKown. They will talk about design in a global environment and how Chinese thought and culture can inspire modern design in new, perhaps unexpected ways. October 16th from 7-9 pm.
