Bali: Where to Stay: Boutique: Hotel Tugu Bali
Hotel Tugu Bali
Those who want to get far away from the trendy crowds should head to this elegant property, which lies between rice fields and a quiet beach in southern Bali’s Canggu. Designed by Javanese hotelier and collector Anhar Setjadibrata, the hotel does double duty as a museum for Setjadibrata’s collection of mostly Southeast Asian art and antiques. Twenty-one guest units are housed in ten thatched-roof pavilions, one of which seems to hover over a lotus pond. Several of the units are named after the island’s most celebrated artists, like Puri Le Mayeur (for Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres, a Belgian expat who painted everyday Balinese life). The 2,100-square-foot villa is decorated with some of his personal effects, along with a four-poster bed with an antique Balinese canopy. There’s also a private dining room on a floating gazebo. Rooms from $315.
