National Geographic Society Explorers-in-Residence and award-winning filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert join Melissa to talk about living in the bush, their obsession with big cats, the buffalo attack that nearly took Beverly’s life and how it completely changed their outlook on life.

Episode Guide

High school sweethearts turned conservation power couple, Dereck and Beverly Joubert are some of the most remarkable innovators and environmentalists in the African Safari world. They began their career and fell in love tracking big cats in the Botswana bush, and they’ve spent decades advocating for the protection of endangered species with their award-winning films like The Last Lions and Soul of the Elephant, which has been seen by more than a billion people. They’ve also founded conservation programs like The Big Cats Initiative and Rhinos Without Borders, and created more than 25 films for National Geographic which has named them “Explorers in Residence;” and they’ve established the Great Plains Foundation which manages some fabulous safari lodges and concessions in Kenya, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

Melissa first met Dereck and Beverly in Cape Town seven years ago and was immediately swept up in their stories and the passion with which they approach a life that wouldn’t be described as conventional but certainly has been full of romance and adventure. In the course of this conversation, during which one can practically hear the sounds of the African bush thanks to their passionate storytelling, the couple discusses with Melissa why conservation matters now more than ever, and they share the very personal story of how a near-death experience that Beverly suffered in the bush in 2017 changed the way they approach work and life.
