Travelers once considered Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city, as no more than a quick stopping point before departing for Cape Town or a safari. And while the city is still largely divided—northern Joburg is predominantly white—certain pockets are slowly but surely gentrifying, bringing a smattering of hotels, cool eateries and bohemian shops to the once violent metropolis. Day 1: Intro to Johannesburg
Begin your day with a visit to the Apartheid Museum. Next tour the Amatuli Fine Art emporium to get your fill of historical artifacts and explore the up-and-coming Braamfontein district with an expert-led gallery tour. After lunch, visit the Apartheid Museum, which opened in 2001 and is widely regarded as one of the most important museums in the world. For dinner, head to the chic restaurant Marble.
Day 2: Township Experience and Historical Tour
This morning, pay a visit with a local guide to Soweto Township, who will be able tour the area with you and allow you to meet community leaders. Some highlights of the tour include visiting Nelson Mandela’s former home and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Return to your hotel for dinner.
