Destination Hero Image

Split

The second-largest city in Croatia (after its capital Zagreb), Split sprawls along a peninsula, jutting dramatically into the Adriatic. As with the country’s other waterfront towns, picturesque beaches abound, but Split stands apart for its fortress-like Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient complex built in the 4th century AD. Split is easily accessible from the Croatian Islands and a good jumping off point for exploring by boat.

    Three Days in Split

A lively and historic city, Split is often used as a base for exploring the nearby islands. Indagare can arrange a customized itinerary with guided touring of the city’s top historic sites, boat charters to nearby islands and interesting day trips. Here’s just one example of what we can design for you.

    • Day 1: Diocletian’s Palace

The imposing Diocletian’s Palace complex stands at the historic center of Split. It consists of a warren of buildings constructed in the 4th century by the eponymous Roman emperor as his retirement home and military lodgings. Today, the complex’s narrow stone streets are occupied by bars, restaurants, shops and museums that highlight the palace’s heritage. It can be tricky to navigate, so it is best to visit the complex with an expert historian who can teach you about Split’s history and overlapping architectural traditions.

    • Day 2: Art and Leisure

Visit Galerija Mestrovic, which Ivan Mestrovic, one of Croatia’s most famous artists, designed to be his home, studio and exhibition space. An expert art curator can provide the context for his works, including the incredible carvings of bronze, marble and wood that are tucked into the extensive gardens outside. Later, head to one of Split’s prettiest beaches for a peaceful afternoon.

    • Day 3: Trogir Day Trip

One of the most charming towns on the Dalmatian coast, Trogir makes a great stop near Split. Spend a day here with an Indagare-vetted guide who can lead you through the top attractions such as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Cipiko Palace, Church of St Nicholas and the Chapel of St. John, home to beautiful Renaissance sculptures. After a morning of touring, spend the afternoon wandering the charming streets that brim with quaint shops and cafés.

"The key to really enjoying the Dalmatian coast is an itinerary that takes advantage of the highlights like Diocletian’s Palace in Split and mixes those with lesser known treasures like the island Korcula or the tiny town of Trogir, which looks like a mini-Venice."
