With its warm Southern Italian climate and miles of beautiful beaches, this region known as “the kingdom of drought and stones,” located in heel of the boot, remains blissfully under-the-radar. • 3 Days: Essential Puglia-LP

    3 Days: Essential Puglia

Most days in Puglia revolve around exploring some of the region’s most important historical sites, coupled with trips to secluded beaches and unspoiled coves. Touring with a great guide is key, and Indagare can arrange for special access and cultural experiences from Matera (just over the border in Basilicata to Lecce and The Salento, further south). Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1: Ancient Ruins

Spend the day with a guide, exploring the ancient town of Matera, which is famous for its prehistoric settlement, purported to be one of the first in Italy. Ease into the evening with an apertivo at a seaside bar with stunning views, followed by a delicious dinner of fresh seafood crudo at an authentic trattoria.

    • Day 2: Village Exploration

Spend today visiting the historic villages of Puglia. The small town of Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its unusual districts of trulli, the ancient limestone houses of the area. After lunch, drive to Ostuni, a small town that has been inhabited since the Stone Age. This afternoon, Indagare can arrange an olive oil tasting at one of the nearby private vineyards. For dinner, enjoy a true Pugliese meal at an Indagare-preferred restaurant.

    • Day 3: Coast or Castle Visit and Wine Tasting

Today, enjoy a day of exploration in the quintessential Italian coastal village of Monopoli with its picturesque fishing port and old town that fronts a narrow rocky beach. The best way to absorb the charming atmosphere is by wandering the cobblestone streets, visiting the Neoclassical cathedral and admiring the sea views. Alternatively, opt for a boat ride or a tour of Castel del Monte, a 13th-century citadel and castle where you can enjoy a private wine tasting at lunch.

“There's nothing not to love about Puglia. The unusually flat landscape covered in centuries-old olive trees and cacti challenges your preconceived notions of Italy; while the fresh and delicious food, olive oil and wine brings you right back.”
