Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest island. Its nickname, the Garden Isle, scarcely does justice to its wilds: with a tropical air, ample rainfall, taro fields, a jumble of jagged peaks and rushing waterfalls, Kauai will seemingly never be tamed.

    3 Days: Essential Kauai

Indagare can plan a custom itinerary for Kauai—the wildest of all the islands—with guided tours and time at the beach or spa. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1

Start your stay with a low-key beach day, either at your resort or at one of the white sand beaches that make up fifty miles of Kauai’s shoreline. Tunnels Beach is a particularly unique spot, with some of the best snorkeling opportunities and superb views of the mountain scenery that defines the South Pacific. In the evening, return to your hotel for a relaxing massage before cocktails overlooking the water and dinner.

    • Day 2

The best ways to see Kauai’s vast, lush landscapes are by air or by sea. You can spend the day on a helicopter tour to visit Mount Waialeale, the rainiest place on earth that is shrouded in mist for most of the year and is risky to access on foot. By sea, you can tour the Na Pali coast on a captained private boat and stop for guided snorkeling, swimming and other water activities. Enjoy dinner under the stars.

    • Day 3

Divide your day between relaxing by the pool or beach and making the most of the many activities that the island has to offer: hiking, surfing, sea kayaking, horseback riding, golf, tennis and paddle boarding. Go solo or learn about the island’s history and ecosystems with a local guide, before an indulgent island-themed farewell dinner at your resort or in town at an Indagare-recommended restaurant.

“We did so much more than surf in Kauai. We discovered roadside juice shacks serving up luscious açai bowls. We looked out onto Waimea Canyon, snacked on unbelievably-fresh poke and surfed in the rain at a lovely spot called Pakalas.” Read the Member Postcard.

“Like many resort island destinations, Hawaii is saddled with a host of stereotypes, many of them kitschy—mai tais, leis, bright-colored shirts on pasty-skinned men. But devoted visitors and natives know that there’s something deeply spiritual and mythical about these islands, floating in the middle of the Pacific like a sprinkling of fairy dust.”
