    5 Days: Essential Lisbon

Savor the rich culture, stylish architecture and idyllic countryside that surrounds Lisbon with a customized Indagare itinerary that includes special access to monuments and guided touring of off-the-beaten-path treasures. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1-2: Historic Lisbon

Spend your mornings with a private guide who can educate you on Lisbon’s history as the seat of imperial exploration. Visit such sites as the Gothic Belem Tower with its amazing city views, the seaside Monument of Discoveries, the Elevador de Santa Justa, the Carmo Convent, the Castelo de San Jorge and the Jeronimos Monastery. After lunches at favorite Indagare-recommended restaurants, you can independently explore Lisbon’s charming neighborhoods, like Chiado and Bairro Alto, in search of boutique shopping and photo ops among the colorful ceramic-tiled residences.

    • Day 3: Sintra

After a traditional Portuguese breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide for a 30-minute drive to Sintra, home to some of the region’s most magnificent palaces. Experience insider access to the Palacio Nacional de Sintra, a UNESCO World-Heritage Site dating back to Moorish rule, as well as the “Versailles of Portugal,” the Quelez Palace. Sintra also boasts wonderful local cuisine and wine. Return to Lisbon for the evening, where you can enjoy dinner and drinks at one of the city’s up-and-coming restaurants.

    • Day 4-5: Explore Lisbon

Reserve your last two days to explore the city’s many cultural gems and indulge in treats like port and pasteis de nata. Visit Museo Nacional de Azulejo, which honors the country’s famous ceramic tile designs and the LX Factory, a former 19th-century factory complex that was transformed into a center for trendy restaurants, cafés, shops and markets. Nearby Cascais, a popular beach-chic locale with amazing seafood, and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the continent, make for great half-day trips.

“The Bairro Alto neighborhood is bursting with tempting, cozy restaurants. I liked the tiny Bota Alta, with its chic local touches, such as Portuguese ceramic plates hanging above dark wood tables.” Read the member postcard.

“Lisbon, with its steep hills, yellow trams and blue-and-white tiles, is a vibrant treat for the eyes. Thanks to its location on the southeastern edge of Europe, temperatures rarely drop much below 60º Fahrenheit, and the days are reliably sunny. Lisbon, in fact, has been named one of the top five sunniest cities on the Continent.”
