Duma Tau Review

DumaTau, which was completely redone in 2021, offers a super chic and high-end safari experience in the elephant-rich north of Botswana. In 2008, waters began flowing once again in the formerly dry Savute Channel, bringing a rich flood of game with it, making this one of the best wildlife spots in northern Botswana. Though its name, Duma Tau, means “roar of the lion,” the area’s varied landscapes—marshes, waterways, forests and grasslands—are home to one of the densest concentrations of elephants in Africa. Here, however, guests can enjoy seeing the majestic beasts without the crowds that can be found in neighboring Chobe National Park. In fact, the camp has been set between two “elephant highways,” ensuring dramatic herd sightings.

Its location on a private concession means that day and night games drives are offered, as well as nature walks, boating, barging and fishing (depending on the season). In just a few days’ stay, you are likely to see lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, hippo and wild dog in addition to the prevalent elephants. The camp hosts no more than twenty guests at a time who arrive to a gorgeous and expansive elevated tented living area, complete with a hand-painted mosaic-tiled bar, restaurant, “curiosity” room and various seating areas. The canvas walls roll up for expansive views of the lagoon that is part of the Linyanti River. Wooden floors are covered with sisal rugs, and comfy couches encourage lingering over wildlife books. African artisan objects like straw baskets, large glass vessels, coconut wood mirrors and framed maps evoke the sense that this might be home of a modern day explorer or brilliant botanist.

Boardwalks with rope railings lead to the eight guest tented suites, including two family suites. The same boardwalk linking the tents also connects to the intimate neighboring sister camp, Little DumaTau, which is made up of three tented suites and available for take-overs only. The tents at both have a modern, airy aesthetic, with wooden floors, leather couches, enlarged vintage canvas maps, paper lamps that channel the cranes and egrets living in the marsh and pops of rose and peach throughout. All of the tents, including the two family suites, have one wall of floor-to-ceiling screens facing the water and expansive outdoor covered decks with a seating area, chaise lounges and plunge pools, allowing guests to admire the landscape and animal sightings. Even the wellness space—situated between DumaTau and Little DumaTau, and complete with a shaded deck, lap pool, spa, snack deli and shop—has a view of the lagoon, so guests are never far from the water and its unending drama: be it an amazing sunrise, hippo parade or elephant shower show.

Who Should Stay

Travelers seeking a high-end, contemporary lodge within the Linyanti region, a vegetable-forward menu and great elephant and wild dog sightings (which are highly likely in the peak season)
