Fewer than 300 boats have licenses to operate on the Nile, and after the Arab Spring when tourism to Egypt evaporated, many of them were moored for months. The hotels in Luxor and Aswan stood as empty as haunted houses, so it’s not surprising that there has been a lack of foreign investment in tourism products in this region. However, since the election of Sisi and his campaign to significantly boost security in tourist-concentrated areas, the better boats are finally filling up again. There are two types of cruises to consider: river cruisers offering larger rooms and hotel-like facilities; and traditional sailing dahabiyas that run on regular schedules or can be chartered privately.
