Review

Originally the private home of the Wildenstein family (a prominent family in the art world), Kenya's exclusive-use Ol Jogi safari lodge offers a completely unique, personalized safari experience on a 60,000 private wildlife reserve. The original focus of the property was game conservation and sustainability, and the private home was only opened to guests in recent years to allow first-hand access to its successful rhino and wildlife conservation program. In addition to game drives during the day and night, activities at Ol Jogi include bush walks, hiking, fishing, rock climbing and conservation activities such as accompanying the rhino rangers on their rounds and walking with a group of baboons with a researcher. The Ol Jogi reserve is known for its population of Eastern black rhino, Grévy’s zebra and wild dogs, all of which are endangered and lesser-seen species. Guests can also visit the working veterinary clinic on property and the wildlife rescue center.

Ol Jogi can accommodate families or groups of up to 20 guests (children of all ages are welcome),  and the staff is superlative. Many employees have been at the property for decades: the French chef has been working for the Wildensteins for over 30 years. On-property amenities include a huge pool, spa with a hammam, bar, movie room and game room. Come mealtime, guests can enjoy delicious fresh cuisine on the private verandah, with direct views of a busy watering hole.

Ol Jogi has 13 cottages, the most lavish of which are the master suites, with their his-and-hers bathrooms and dressing rooms and geode fireplace mantles. The living areas in the accommodations are defined by dark wood, Murano glass, decadent fabrics and art from the Wildenstein's private collection. The décor throughout is quirky and over-the-top, but it all combines to make you feel as though you're in someone's charming, eclectic private residence.

The property can be accessed by its private airstrip, which is just a 45-minute flight from Nairobi and a ten-minute drive from the house.

Who Should Stay

Families and friends looking for a completely private (albeit expensive) safari experience in Kenya, with attentive, personalized service and access to a superlative conservation program. The décor may feel a little too over-the-top for some.
