Review

Forty-five minutes from the Johannesburg airport (in the posh Sandhurst suburb), lies the hidden jungle oasis that is the Saxon Hotel. As the imposing gates open to reveal lush, green grounds within, guests experience a sense of serenity that will come to define their time at the bucolic resort. With just 53 rooms and suites, the boutique property manages to be cozy, while still having the amenities of a larger hotel.

The Saxon owners are patrons of the arts, and have amassed an impressive collection of pieces from both established and emerging artists, including local Southern Africans. Along with the warm décor, starring reclaimed woods and a neutral palette, the eclectic art collection imbues the property with a strong sense of character. This sentiment is further solidified by the property’s storied résumé: Nelson Mandela wrote his autobiography here, and his portrait hangs amongst those of other notable guests like Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey.

Guests can unwind in the many lounges, by the infinity pool or the vibrant koi pond and enjoy the fantastic menu offerings at Qunu Restaurantin either dining room or on the outdoor terrace. The extensive spa offers rejuvenating massages (including their signature sound-therapy treatment) as well as hair and nail appointments.

Guest rooms are divided between the main building and three additional villas, which offer an intimate experience and are connected to the main building via an elevated sky bridge. The villas feature a more contemporary design than those in the main building, and each has a private pool, fully equipped kitchen and dedicated 24-hour butler and chef.

Who Should Stay

Families and couples looking for a boutique, sophisticated haven to recharge after a long flight. Couples and adults may prefer the rustic authenticity of the rooms in the main house, while families may prefer the villas.
