Photo Essay: Graham Springer

Drawn to the wild expanses of Africa and fascinated by wildlife, Graham Springer has spent over a decade working independently and as a photographer for such outlets as the BBC, National Geographic and Smithsonian. To celebrate the opening of Asilia Highlands near Tanzania’s Ngorongoro crater, Springer was commissioned to do a series documenting the local Maasai people—“an intriguing challenge” for the esteemed photographer. “I didn’t want to stage scenes; I wanted to make images that wove authentic elements of daily life, the culture of the people and dramatic landscapes into my own personal aesthetic.” Here, we highlight some of Springer’s most striking images alongside anecdotes about his time in Tanzania. grahamspringer.com
