andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge Review

Ernest Hemingway, who knew a thing or two about eastern Africa, called Lake Manyara “the loveliest I had seen in Africa.” A shallow freshwater lake in the Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, Lake Manyara offers incredible animal and landscape diversity. The andBeyond lodge, located in Lake Manyara’s National Park, is one of the company’s smaller wildlife enclaves but the animal viewings can still be spectacular, as attests member Andrea van Beuren who traveled there with her family: “The kids got to see elephants, lions (in trees), giraffes, hippos, monkeys, flamingos, wildebeests and warthogs—all on our drive from the tiny airport to the camp. The terrain is beautiful, with mountains coming down sharply to the edge of the lake.”

Designed to make as little impact on the environment as possible, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge takes its cue from the area’s famous tree-climbing lions by offering accommodations in nine stilted tree houses that rise above the ground (don’t worry: they are not cat-accessible). Each of the exclusive, lofty suites, made out of local timber, comes with a veranda, an outdoor shower and large screened windows that look right into the deep-green forest. Interiors are modern and tastefully decorated with such distinctive touches as handcrafted bath amenities and crayons and drawing pad in case you feel inspired to sketch some of the wildlife that surrounds you. At night, generators supply power, but most visitors rave about listening to the animals—below and above—while lying in the dark of their safari tree houses.

Visitors interested in nocturnal animals will be thrilled to know that Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is one of the few places in Tanzania where guests can experience night-time game drives (at an additional fee). There are also extras like the afternoon bush walk, as described by Van Beuren as one of her family’s most memorable afternoons: “We opted to go on a late afternoon “walk” one afternoon as we were told that this would be the only camp where we would be given that option. We paid a hunter and a Maasai guide to accompany us (along with our guide) from the bottom of the mountains out to the lake as the sun was setting, and it was spectacular. The lodge ended up surprising us by meeting us with a full bar and grill just as the girls were starting to feel tired. The whole experience was magical.”

The intimate size of the lodge makes it a favorite amongst couples and honeymooners, but families are also welcome. Before you plan your trip, know that the hottest months are September, October and January when temperatures can climb into the mid-90s. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is located on the southern border of the Lake Manyara National Park. Regional Air services operate a twice-daily scheduled flight from Arusha airport to the Manyara airstrip, followed by a two-and-a-half-hour chauffeured game drive to the lodge through the National Park.

Who Should Stay

Those who like smaller camps and appreciate a diversity of wildlife. It draws mainly couples but families are welcome.
