Review

Eight miles upstream of Victoria Falls in the heart of Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, Sussi & Chuma offers a minimalist, chic design and riverside settings. The main lodge feels light and airy thanks to mostly white furnishings and a soaring thatched roof, and features elements of traditional Zambian architecture as well as cobalt suede couches, C-shaped lounge beds and exceptional water views. The pièce de résistance is the beautiful oval bar, which provides a meeting place for guests to mix and mingle.

A skeleton of raised boardwalks connects the main lodge to 12 stilted tree houses. Sprinkled throughout the lush vegetation, these suites have private decks and river views and are decorated with light wicker furniture, dark wood furnishings and large freestanding bathtubs. Sussi & Chuma also offers two spacious two-bedroom homes, each with a private pool, which are both staffed with a guide and driver, chef, housekeeper and butler. As these villas are not on silts, they are great for families with younger children.

Sussi & Chuma offers a wide range of activities, including everything from canoeing down gentle rapids to see hippopotami and elephants up-close to game drives in the national park. Anthropological activities like village visits are particularly interesting, as the hotel works closely with the local community to develop education and healthcare programs. When not out on an excursion, guests can lounge poolside in a cabana or enjoy the hotel’s signature spa treatment, a massage that incorporates local fruits and rooibos. Meals are served in the main building, and the chefs will craft dinners around individual preferences.
