Review

Set in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park about 20-minutes by car from Livingstone, Toka Leya is removed from the bustling city, but is still close enough to offer guests a number of action-packed activities. The main deck is shaded by the leaves of a 100-foot tree that extends up through the middle of the deck, and the rest of the lodge, including the open-air dining pavilion, is built with this same nature-inspired vibe.

The 12 tented suites blend beautifully into their woodland surroundings, and feature large raised wooden decks complete with a cozy seating area and a suspended bamboo chair, ideal for enjoying your morning coffee with a view of the Zambezi. The canvas and wood accommodations are adorned in muted tones with antique prints of Victoria Falls, woven jute rugs, plush beds with drawback mosquito netting, leather armchairs and locally designed accents such as stone-carved fish and Zambian baskets. Toka Leya also has three two-bedroom family tents, which are great for groups traveling with young children.

While the focus here is on relaxation, there is no shortage of cultural and adrenaline-filled activities. Guests can go into Livingstone to learn about the history of Victoria Falls, and while game drives are available, the big game is not as plentiful, so the highlight is an afternoon walking safari to see the local family of white rhino (who are thriving given their 24/7 anti-poaching protection). Toka Leya also offers a particularly special afternoon walking safari to see rhinos. Like most hotels in the area, Toka Leya can also arrange helicopter rides over Victoria Falls and visits to a local market.

The cuisine at Toka Leya will please all travelers, offering everything from traditional Zambian dishes to pizzas from the hotel’s clay oven. Additional amenities include a riverside firepit and dining area, an infinity pool, a waterfront bar and a glass-enclosed gym with great views. Spa treatments can be arranged upon request.

Who Should Stay

Travelers who want to be close to the Falls as well as safari enthusiasts (Toka Leya is known for having top-notch guides).
