Review

One of Africa’s most storied properties, the Royal Livingstone beautifully combines Victorian elegance and traditional colonial design. The main foyer exudes grandeur with high ceilings, walls lined with vintage National Geographic magazines, antique birdcages and old-fashioned traveler’s trunks. The sprawling, 173-room property occupies a prime location near the majestic falls, which can be accessed for free with one’s room. The colonial-style rooms are sprinkled throughout 17 buildings, and while most tend to be on the smaller size, all boast beautiful balconies that look out on the Zambezi River.

The hotel has several different restaurants, ranging from the formal dining room to the more casual sundeck, which offers an exceptional view of the spray from the falls and a light menu of snacks. The Travelers Bar, punctuated by a wall lined with well-aged liquor and stacks of Champagne coupes, serves a delightful afternoon tea. The lounge offers an around-the-clock menu of light meals, whereas the Royal Livingstone room is a sophisticated, fine-dining spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The most special experience, however, is a meal aboard the hotel’s Royal Livingstone Express, a vintage steam locomotive that tours the area around the falls and serves a gourmet tasting menu.

The hotel offers a number of activities in greater Livingstone, including bungee jumping, white-water rafting, a helicopter ride over the falls and excursions to Devil’s Pool (a pool at the top of the falls that daring adventurists can swim in). On property, guests can make use of the well-equipped gym and beautiful outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the Zambezi (and, occasionally, hippos at play). The hotel also offers facilities like a lavish spa with hair and nail salon, and sprawling lawns, where zebras often peacefully graze.
