Review

Gliding in an open-topped boat along the Zambezi River in the late afternoon with the skies beginning to streak pink and a cocktail in hand is one of the most magical experiences in Zimbabwe. It can be done right from Wilderness Safari’s glamorous new tented camp, Chikwenya. Hippos bob their heads on either side, suddenly submerging as the boat pulls close, then popping up again in another spot. An elephant family decides to swim across an inlet to the opposite bank and plunges into the water, while herons and other wading birds soar overhead. The air is filled with animal sounds and the gurgle of the current.

Situated on a small private concession in the northeastern corner of Mana Pools National Park, Chikwenya overlooks the floodplains and river, with the Zambian escarpment rising grandly in the distance. Opened in 2018, it feels fresh and bright. Seven spacious tents set on raised wooden platforms are spread along a path with views towards the water. The interiors are stylish, done in natural tones of crisp white and wood, with high ceilings, mahogany canopy beds, hardwood floors and louvred doors that open out onto private terraces, some with plunge pools. While they don’t have A/C, the tents are shaded by albida and mahogany trees. Just down the walkway is a comfortable communal bar area, a beautiful open living room, a campfire circle and a pool. Food is delicious and plentiful, usually served buffet style al fresco, with ample fresh fruit and produce. Service is warm and polished.

Activities include boating, catch-and-release fishing, canoeing and kayaking, bush walks, and both day and night game drives in Mana Pools.
