Review

Situated on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls, the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel was built in 1904. With a prime position overlooking the spectacular falls, the hotel is a luxurious base for families or couples wishing to explore the area without compromising impeccable service, fine cuisine and gracious interiors. However, it is essential to pick the right rooms as many have not been upgraded to a five-star level. The property was originally built as accommodations for workers on the Cape-to-Cairo railway, and the railway still owns 50% of the hotel. Today, it retains its genteel heritage, but thanks to a renovation in 2013, some areas feel fresh and updated.

The 161 rooms and suites are spread between the grand main house and the stylish Stables wing, which has a private check-in area, courtyards and complimentary afternoon tea. Each of the accommodations is decorated in period furnishings with mahogany accents, canopied beds and traditional floral. The suites boast lovely views of either the Zambezi River or the hotel gardens; and these are the ones to book.

The Victoria Falls Hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, The Livingstone Room, befits such an iconic hotel with its opulent décor and exquisite à la carte selection and tasting menu. The more relaxed option is Jungle Junction, which serves breakfast in the morning and has an abundant buffet and entertainment in the evening. Stanley’s Terrace offers daily high tea with views of the wide lawn that spills down to Victoria Falls.

The resort houses a small spa, hair salon, fitness center, outdoor pool with food and beverage service and art exhibitions both outdoors and inside the onsite gallery. The hotel can arrange a host of off-property activities such as river cruises, visits to the famous Devil’s Pool, fishing, rafting, bungee-jumping, helicopter tours, safaris at nearby national parks, golfing and market and village visits.
