What to Expect

Long overlooked after years of upheaval, Zimbabwe is enjoying a resurgence as a top safari destination. This region offers an incredible variety of landscapes, UNESCO World Heritage sites like Victoria Falls and some of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. This 11-night adventure offers unparalleled wildlife-viewing in some of Zimbabwe’s most animal-rich national parks and reserves—Sapi, Hwange, Zambezi and Mana Pools—and the chance to make an impact through excursions with conservationists.

Hear more about this trip and Project ReWild Zambezi from Melissa Biggs Bradley below:

At the heart of this trip is a 280,000-acre private concession, the Sapi Private Reserve, located along Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River and forming the heart of a 1.6-million-acre UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sapi was a former hunting concession that had seen its wildlife decimated over the years. In 2017, Great Plains took over the reserve to conserve and protect the land as a photographic safari destination. Sapi struggles with underpopulation of wildlife, making it the prime location to welcome a massive relocation effort, to save animals who are overpopulating the Savé Valley Conservancy. Project ReWild Zambezi, which will relocate 3,000 animals across Zimbabwe, including 400 elephants and species like lions, buffalo, impala, zebras, painted dogs, eland, and more, is one of the largest wildlife relocations in Southern Africa’s history and is Great Plains’ most ambitious project to-date. On this journey, you will be able to go out into the bush to track these animals with the Project ReWild conservationists, for a behind-the-scenes experience that is truly once-in-a-lifetime. Pending the movement of the animals, you will also witness live releases on the ground as the project progresses, and you’ll get a sneak peek at the operations centers for a special understanding of the science and technology behind the project—all in support of this historic initiative, which has never been accomplished before on this scale.

Itinerary highlights include:

  • Witness and participate in Project ReWild Zambezi’s relocation efforts—a once-in-a-lifetime, intimate experience—in the company of exceptional safari experts from Great Plains Conservation, as well as Melissa Biggs Bradley, the founder of Indagare and author of Safari Style: Exceptional African Camps and Lodges.

  • Enjoy daily explorations by vehicle, canoe, boat and on foot, with expert guides (with both day and night excursions) that will reveal magnificent creatures like big cats, rhinos, buffalo, hippos, elephants, giraffes, wild dogs, hyenas, zebras, impala and many species of birds and more—all in spectacular private concessions.

  • Relax at three beautiful lodges that offer a variety of immersive wilderness and cultural activities—including guided tracking, stargazing, birding, river cruises and helicopter touring. You’ll start at Tembo Plains Camp on the Sapi Reserve, and then move along to Camp Hwange in Hwange National Park, ending at Mpala Jena Camp in Zambezi National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit the iconic UNESCO Site Victoria Falls (at additional cost).
